Witold-K
1932 — 2025

Witold Leszek Kaczanowski — known simply as Witold-K — was born in Warsaw on May 15, 1932. He studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and became one of the most distinctive voices in post-war Polish art.

In 1964, awarded a scholarship by the Polish Ministry of Culture, he travelled to Paris — and was subsequently barred from returning to Poland after smuggling a text by Stanisław Mackiewicz to France, where it was published in Kultura. He lived in exile in Paris and later in the United States.

His work featured in over seventy exhibitions and forty solo shows, including alongside Picasso, Chagall, Miró and Braque. In 2007 he became the first Polish artist to have a retrospective at Sotheby's Amsterdam.
